DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson field hockey team will look to get in the win column as it welcomes Saint Louis (0-13, 0-4 Atlantic 10) Friday, Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m., and visits Appalachian State (2-8, 0-0) Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tilt.
About Davidson
Davidson enters the weekend with a 6-5 overall mark and a 3-1 Atlantic 10 record. The Wildcats have posted four shutouts this season.
Limiting opponents scoring opportunities has been a point of emphasis for the Wildcats, which has translated into just a 1.33 goals-against average, the second-lowest mark in the Atlantic 10. That mark, coupled with an average of 1.78 goals per game for the Wildcats, gives Davidson the third-best scoring margin in the conference at 0.44.
Davidson has spread out its scoring attack throughout the roster. 10 student-athletes have registered at least one point this season.
Last Time Out
Davidson posted a 1-1 record last weekend in a pair of Atlantic 10 contests. The Wildcats picked up a thrilling 1-0 overtime win at Saint Francis, before dropping a hard-fought 2-1 battle against Lock Haven.
Lucy Pidcock scored the game-winner in overtime against the Red Flash to extend Davidson's win streak to three. Emily Leytham registered a career-high 14 saves in the shutout victory.
Anne Federico scored her first goal of the season just 4:10 into the opening frame, but Lock Haven's two first-half goals held up as the Bald Eagles captured a 2-1 victory.
Scoring Tandem
Senior captains Melissa Funsten and Anna Davis have combined to score nine of Davidson's 20 goals this season. Funsten has tallied five goals in five games, while Davis has goals in three games and her four total scores matches her career-high from her sophomore season. Of the nine goals, the duo have each tallied a game-winner this season.
Honor Roll
Senior Emily Leytham earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Weekends honors for the week of Oct. 5 after leading the Wildcats to a 1-1 record. At Saint Francis, Leytham was peppered with shots all afternoon, but stood tall and turned away a career-high 14 shots. The win marked Leytham's third consecutive shutout.
Spread The Wealth
In total, 10 Wildcats have at least a point this season, led by Anna Davis' 12 points (4g, 4a) and Melissa Funsten's 10 (5g). Becca Jones has found the back of the net three times to round out Davidson's leading scorers. The Wildcats have tallied 20 goals
In Between The Pipes
In the cage, senior Emily Leytham has controlled many games for the Wildcats, earning four shutout victories this season. In 11 starts, Leytham has accumulated 49 saves while allowing 14 goals, for a .778 save percentage and a .172 goals allowed per game average.
Leytham's save percentage ranks first in the Atlantic 10 and 10th in the nation, while her goals against average is good for third in the conference and 12th nationally.
Where We Stand
Davidson enters the weekend in sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10 behind unbeaten Richmond (5-6, 2-0). Massachusetts, Saint Joseph's and VCU sit in a three-way tie for third with a 2-1 mark. Lock Haven (2-2) is currently sixth, and La Salle (1-2) ranks seventh, while Saint Francis (0-2) and Saint Louis (0-4) are in search of their first conference wins.
