DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team gears up for the start of its Fall season this weekend when they travel to the Wake Forest Invitational, Friday thru Sunday.
This will be the first of four Fall events the Wildcats have scheduled. They will go to the Charlotte Invitational next weekend, Oct. 16-17, followed by the Carolina Regional held in Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 22-25. The 'Cats final event is also in Chapel Hill as they take part in the Kitty Harrison Invitational, Nov. 6-8.
"We are so excited for our first tournament of the year," said second-year head coach Sara Anundsen. "The team has been working extremely hard preparing and we feel ready to step out on the court and compete to the best of our ability. The Wake Forest Invitational always draws high level competition, so this will be a great opportunity for the Cats!"
Under the guidence of Anundsen, Davidson looks to carry over its success from a season ago into the 2015-16 campaign. All six starters return and eight letterwinners in all from last year's 12-10 team. The Wildcats went 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 and earned a win in the league tournament over St. Bonaventure before falling in the quarterfinals to Fordham. The 12 wins last year were the most since 2010 when Davidson went 15-8.
A trio of Wildcats were honored last year by the A-10. Elaina Cummer, and first-years Anna Catharine Feaster and Ava Todd were each honored as they earned spots on the league's two all-conference teams. Feaster was named to the league's first team, while Todd and Cummer were each honored with a spot on the A-10 All-Second Team. All three combined to win either the league's performer or rookie of the week award nine times.
Feaster (16-6) and Todd (team-best 19-3) combined to win 35 singles matches, while Cummer reached the double-digit mark with 10 wins.
In addition to those returners, juniors Jenna Brunner (9-10 singles record) and Sarah Stein (career-best 8-9) along with Cassidy Shell (7-5 as freshman) will help fill in the lineup. Courtney McCray (1-0) and Ally Sexton also return to give the Wildcats a deep lineup.
Davidson also welcomes freshmen Gabrielle Centenari (Baltimore, Md.) and Megan Scholvinck (Mill Valley, Calif.) to this year's squad.
