DAVIDSON, N.C. — The start of the Davidson women's basketball season begins today when the Wildcats open with their first official practice at John M. Belk Arena for the 2015-16 campaign.
Entering their sixth season under the guidance of Michele Savage, Davidson is starting its second year in the Atlantic 10.
"I'm anxious to get started with official practice on Monday," said Savage, who has collected 79 career wins in five years. "I am looking forward to getting the season going and have the whole team together everyday as we enter our second year in Atlantic 10. Our individual workouts have been great and I'm excited to see our freshmen grow and help the returners in making this a fun year."
A few quick notes about the team and the season ahead...
• The 2015-16 season will be the program's 37th. Last year saw the Wildcats collect the program's 400th win.
• Davidson will be looking to improve on last year's 5-25 overall record as it enters its second year in the A-10 after going 1-14 in league play.
• The 'Cats won their first-ever Atlantic 10 game at Saint Louis, Jan. 18.
• Davidson has reached postseason play three times, earning bids into the Women's NIT in 2007, 2012, 2013.
• Over the past 13 years, Davidson has won at least 15 games in nine of those seasons.
• Three of those seasons saw the Wildcats win 23, 22 and 22 games, respectively, with both 22-win campaigns coming under Savage in back-to-back seasons.
• Davidson returns its top three scorers from last year in Hannah Early (14.4 ppg, and set single-season three-point mark with 74), Mackenzie Latt (A-10 All-Freshmen Team, 11 double-doubles, 11.6 ppg, and third in A-10 in rebounding at 8.2 rpg) and Dakota Dukes (9.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg).
Roster Breakdown...
• Davidson returns nine letterwinners and all five of its starters from a year ago.
• The Wildcats welcome four freshmen: Kianna Speight (Conway, Ark.), Justine Lyon (Durham, N.C.), Kyla Roland (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Mya Webb (Durham, N.C.).
• Overall, the 2015-16 roster will feature three seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen.
Schedule...
Davidson will face each of the 13 A-10 opponents during the 16-game league slate that features eight home and eight away games. The Wildcats open A-10 play on the road for the first two games. They will start Jan. 2 at Fordham and then travel to La Salle four days later. Saint Louis comes to Belk Arena for the 'Cats' league home opener, Jan. 10, followed by St. Bonaventure visiting, Jan. 13.
In addition to their 16-game league schedule, will play the likes of Atlantic Coast Conference opponents Wake Forest and N.C. State on the road, while hosting Big Ten foe Michigan State in John M. Belk Arena. It is the third year in a row the 'Cats have hosted a top-tier opponent after welcoming Rutgers and Southern California the past two years.
