DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson swimming and diving programs completed day one of competition against Old Dominion (men's & women's) and Marshall (women's) Friday night at the Charles A. Cannon Pool.
The Wildcats tallied seven first-place finishes, including three from the women and four from the men, and 15 second and third-place showings on the first-day of competition.
"We're right in the heart of three exciting dual meets," commented Davidson head coach John Young. "We knew that Marshall and ODU would be tough, and ready to race, and I'm excited to see which teams bring the most energy to tomorrow morning's races."
Junior Elise Lankiewicz led the way for the women as she captured gold medals in the 1650 freestyle (17:15.07) and the 200 butterfly (2:06.81).
Senior Luke Burton recorded another flawless finish, winning the 100 backstroke (49.68) and the 50 freestyle (20.98). Sophomore Clay Resweber capped off the top individual finishes, winning the 1000 freestyle 11 seconds faster than the competition (9:43.12).
The Wildcats finished the evening strong, dominating the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of Lauren Malachowski, Kassie Shannon, Lankiewicz and Angie Healy put together a time of 7:41.41 to win gold just milliseconds before Marshall.
Resweber, Jake Perron, Cole Riggan and Burton impressively touched the wall at the 6:57.06 mark that was just .40 seconds before Old Dominion, while Riley League, Matt Bode, Ryan Knohl and Max Schimanski put together a 7:09.04 mark to place third.
The five teams will jump back into the water tomorrow, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m.
