About Davidson
The Wildcats will bring a successful 2015 campaign to a close this Saturday. Davidson, with an 8-9 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the Atlantic 10, enter the season finale in second place in the conference standings.
In total, 11 Wildcats have at least a point this season, led by senior captain Anna Davis' 16 (6g, 4a) and Melissa Funsten's 15 (6g, 3a). Juniors Becca Jones and Anne Federico have each found the back of the net four times, while Paige Albert, Katherine English and Lucy Pidcock have each tallied three scores.
The senior class has stepped up immensely in 2015, accounting for 14 of the Wildcats' 26 goals and 36 of 71 points, with Davis, Funsten and Pidcock leading the way.
In the cage, senior Emily Leytham has controlled many games for the Wildcats, earning five shutout victories this year.
Last Time Out
The last time Davidson saw the field was at No. 5 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. Despite six saves from Emily Leytham, the Deacs edged the Wildcats, 2-0.
Davidson's offense was slowed in the first half, as Wake Forest held possession for most of the initial frame, putting eight shots on goal and earning two penalty corners. The Wildcats picked the intensity up early in the second half, as Lucy Pidcock launched a shot two minutes in. 10 minutes later, the Wildcats earned their only penalty corner of the game, which resulted in a shot from Katherine English.
When It All Comes Together
In Davidson's eight victories this season, the Wildcats are outscoring opponents 21-2. Including five of Emily Leytham's shutouts, the defense has limited shot and penalty corner chances for the opposition, giving the offense plenty of opportunities to average its 2.62 goals per game in wins.
Defending the Cage
Senior Emily Leytham has enjoyed an impressive final season for Davidson, posting 79 saves in 17 games. The Charlottesville, Va., native is turning away 79 percent of shots, which ranks second in the conference and eighth in the nation. Her goals against average (1.28) is good for fourth in the conference and 12th in the nation.
Score Early and Often
The Wildcats have scored 11 first half goals this season and are 8-3 when scoring the first goal. Davidson has registered 13 second half goals and two tallies in extra frames. The Wildcats have had a flare for the dramatics this season, going to extra frames three times to own a 2-1 mark in overtime games.
2015 NFHCA Senior Game
Senior Captain Melissa Funsten was among the 38 NCAA Division I field hockey players chosen to participate in the 2015 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Senior Game. The contest will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the University of Michigan. The Raleigh, N.C. has been a constant force in the offensive third this season.
