DAVIDSON, N.C. – Christian Lawal scored a pair of second-half goals to lead George Washington to a 2-1 victory over Davidson in both teams' Atlantic 10 men's soccer opener Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.

The setback also ends the Wildcats' school-record 16-game home-unbeaten streak as they fall to 3-4-3 overall and 0-1-0 in the league.

"Credit George Washington for its comeback and fight," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "It took a strong performance to knock us off our long home-unbeaten streak."

Lawal tied the game in the 56th minute with a low drive that deflected into the net and scored the eventual game-winner off a through ball from Koby Osei-Wusu at the 67:33 mark.

"We were not great on their goals, but we needed to create more scoring opportunities ourselves by composure and precision to test their keeper more."

Shortly after the Colonials made a team save on an Alec Rotunda header, Davidson had another chance to equalize, but Jack Lopez made a diving save to turn away a penalty kick with 4:05 to play.

"I have complete confidence in Shane (Macnamara). If he wants our next PK, it's his," Spear commented.

Both Matt Pacifici and Lopez finished with seven saves each, while George Washington (4-5-0, 1-0-0 A-10) held a slim 12-11 edge in shots.

In the 22nd minute, Shane Macnamara tracked down a Valeriy Sviderskiy miss and found the back of the net with his second goal of the season, to put the 'Cats up, 1-0.

"We started out well, but need to improve on building on scoring first by pushing on. We let our foot off the gas and good teams won't just back down," said Coach Spear.

"We pick up and move on, plain and simple. It's all about the next A-10 match and Fordham."
