RICHMOND, Va. — The annual Atlantic 10 media day took place Wednesday, Oct. 28, and head coach Michele Savage of the Davidson women's basketball team met with local and national media at the Richmond Marriott.
The day consisted of a luncheon and then breakout sessions with all the media as well as the conference. Savage is entering her sixth year at the helm of the Wildcat program as they begin their second year in the A-10 after making the transition from the Southern Conference to the league last year.
In addition, the league released its preseason rankings and all-conference teams along with an all-defensive squad. Davidson was picked to finish 14th in the standings.
After winning both the A-10 regular season and tournament titles, George Washington was picked to repeat. It was the league's preseason favorite, getting 12 of the 14 first-place votes and 194 total points. The Colonials return A-10 Player and Defender of the Year Jonquel Jones and fellow first-team member Caira Washington. Both players were named to the preseason all-conference first team.
Behind GW was last year's runner-up Dayton, which earned the other two first place votes and had 177 total points. The Flyers put one player each on the three preseason all-conference teams. Rounding out the top five was Duquesne (154 points), Fordham (132) and Saint Louis (126). Of those five, both GW and Dayton went to the NCAA Tournament, with the Flyers reaching the Elite Eight, while the Dukes and Rams each made the Women's NIT along with Richmond, which was picked sixth in the preseason poll.
Davidson returns all five of its starters, including A-10 All-Rookie Team pick Mackenzie Latt. Last year saw Latt, who was twice named A-10 Rookie of the Week during the season, finish third in the league in rebounding (8.2 rpg), while averaging close to 12 points a contest. She also recorded 11 double-doubles, the fifth-most in a Wildcat single season since 1992-93.
Joining Latt is 1,000-point scorer Hannah Early, who led the team with a career-best 14.4 points per game average. She became the program's 17th player to reach 1,000 career points last year and is currently in 12th place all-time with 1,073 points.
In all, the Wildcats return nine letterwinners and welcome four newcomers to this year's roster.
Davidson tips its season off with a seven-game road swing, starting Nov. 13 at Furman. This will be the second straight year the Wildcats and Paladins have tipped their season's off against each other. For the 'Cats, the road swing is the longest to start the year since an eight-game trip to open the 2009-10 campaign.
