DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey enters the home stretch of its 2015 regular season campaign with a trip to No. 7 Wake Forest Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Kentner Stadium.
About Davidson
Davidson (8-8, 5-2 A-10) will be looking to bounce back after a tough weekend that saw it drop a critical conference battle at Saint Joseph's Saturday, 2-1.
The Wildcats are averaging 1.62 goals per game, while limiting their opponents to just 1.25 goals per game. Davidson has benefited from a balanced attack, which is averaging 1.62 goals per game. 11 players registered a point this season.
Anna Davis leads the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists, while Melissa Funsten isn't far behind with 15 points on six goals and three helpers. Anne Federico and Becca Jones have also played important roles in the offensive third, finding the back of the cage three times, while Lucy Pidcock, Paige Albert and Katherine English have chipped in two goals apiece.
Last Time Out
Hannah Fisher registered her first goal of the season midway through the opening frame, but it wasn't enough as Saint Joseph's found the back of the cage twice in the second-half to earn a win over the Wildcats, Oct. 24.
Off a penalty corner, Davidson knocked the ball around before eventually finding Fisher's stick. Fisher fired a shot to give her team an early lead. Freshman Courtney Byler was credited with the assist.
Defending The Cage
Senior Emily Leytham has enjoyed an impressive final season for Davidson, posting 74 saves in 16 games. The Charlottesville, Va., native is turning away 79 percent of shots, which is second in the conference. Her goals against average (1.58) is good for fourth in the A-10.
A Look at No. 7 Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons carry an 11-4 overall mark and a 4-2 record in ACC play into the midweek matchup. Wake Forest's four defeats have come at the hands of ranked opponents. This includes its most recent loss at top-ranked Syracuse where the Deacs fell, 6-0.
Wake Forest shares the offensive responsibilities, as five players have at least 10 points this season. Leading the way is Jess Newark with a team-high 11 goals and 29 points. Jule Grashoff is second with 10 tallies and four assists, while Emily Conroe has eight helpers.
