DAVIDSON, N.C.  —  Despite putting three players in double figures in points, including getting a double-double from Mackenzie Latt, the Davidson women's basketball team dropped a 71-62 decision to Rhode Island Sunday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 contest as the Wildcats finished out their three-game homestand at John M. Belk Arena.

The Wildcats (4-12, 0-3 A-10) were playing the Rams for just the second time in program history. URI improved to 10-5 overall on the year and 2-1 in league play.

Latt's double-double, 18 points on 9-of-18 shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds, was her sixth of the season and second in her past three games. Hannah Early followed with 17 points, getting 11 of those in the first half to go along with all six of her rebounds.

Dakota Dukes rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 11 points and added five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Diona Johnson had a solid game off the bench, contributing nine points, a season-best six rebounds and a season-high tying five dimes.

Rhode Island matched the 'Cats with three of its own double-digit scorers, led by Charise Wilson's 22 points, 11 in each half. The freshman hit five of her six field goals from behind the arc. Symone Bullard added 17 points and Tayra Melendez chipped in 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

The three Rams combined to go 19-for-21 from the free-throw line, including 10-for-11 in the final 1:29 when the Wildcats made one last charge in trying to come back. Rhode Island as a team was 20-for-25, with a 17-of-22 showing in the second half.

Down 56-38 with 6:03 left, the 'Cats tried to make one last push, getting the deficit down to nine (60-51) on a 13-4 run that was capped off by a long three-ball from Early with 2:21 remaining. The 'Cats continued their charge, getting a fast-break layup by Johnson with 35 ticks left to make it 66-59. She was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw in trying to convert the three-point play.

Then after two URI free throws, Johnson brought Davidson again within seven (68-61) on another layup in the lane with 26 seconds remaining. Rhode Island sealed up the win though by hitting its last four free throws and holding Davidson to a single free throw.

Early and Latt started the game out in the first half by scoring all 14 of Davidson's points for a 14-13 lead with 12:33 on the clock. Later, a pair of Dukes' free throws made it 18-13.

Rhode Island then used a 17-4 run over the next five minutes to grab the lead for good at 30-22 and headed into halftime up 30-26. Wilson scored six points in the run, including hitting one of the Rams' two three-pointers during the spurt.

Davidson shot a game-high 45.3 percent from the floor and held a 36-31 edge on the boards. It also scored 36 points in the paint, four  off its season high, and had a season-best 12 fast-break points.

The Wildcats next head to Richmond, Va., to take on VCU at 7 p.m., Jan. 15, in another Atlantic 10 contest.
