HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – Davidson senior pitcher Nick Neitzel had a strong summer on the mound and was named to the 2014 All-Coastal Plain League second team, the league office announced.
Each team featured 21 players, including five starting pitchers.
In 60.2 innings pitched over 12 appearances and 10 starts, Neitzel went 4-3 with a 2.23 ERA, which ranked fifth in the league, and struck out 61 batters, which ranked fourth in the league. He led the CPL with 34 batters struck out looking, 15 more than the next highest total.
The Coastal Plain League is a summer collegiate baseball league that features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Further more, the CPL has had over 1,200 alumni drafted and 74 alums – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut thus far; while another notable alum – Russell Wilson – won Super Bowl XLVIII.
