
A Trio of Freshmen Pace Davidson to First Place Finish

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –A trio of freshmen led the Davidson women's cross country team to a first place finish at the Eye Opener to open up its 2014 campaign.
Sarah Sears earned the first win of her college career, leading the field with a time of 18:59.66 over the 3.1-mile course, while Allison Cheeseman (19:07.03) and Helen Webster (19:09.65) followed to take second and third place respectively.
I'm really excited with how our women's teams performed this weekend," said Jen Straub, the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field. "It was a great start to the season! We will definitely build on this moving forward as the competition gets stronger."
The Wildcats finished first overall with an average time of 19:12.15. Sophomore Olivia Menden and junior Grace Watt rounded out the Wildcats top-10 finishers. Menden placed seventh in a time of 19:21.31 while Watt crossed the line in 19:23.14 to take ninth.
Freshman Sierra Ponthiers posted a time of 19:28.72 to rank 11th, followed by Brigid Behrens who crossed in 19:37.54 to rank 15th.
Davidson will be back in action on Sept. 12 at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
