Papciak Paces Golf on Day One of Fighting Irish Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Playing in just his second collegiate event, Spencer Papciak carded a one-over 72 to pace Davidson on day one of the Fighting Irish Classic hosted by Notre Dame.
The three-day/54-hole event is being played on both the Warren Golf Course (Par 71, 7,023 yards) and Lost Dunes Golf Club (Par 71, 6,905 yards) layouts.
After making the turn in 37, Papciak opened with back-to-back birdies on his inward nine before posting 35. The freshman is tied for 15th, one shot clear of teammate Todd Eckstein, who shot a steady two-over 73.
Junior David Sargent also sits just inside the Top-25 for Davidson following a 75. Ralph Blasey (80), Alex Nianouris (86) and Andy Simmons (88) are also competing for the Wildcats.
As a team, Davidson shot 300 and is currently in seventh place just seven strokes out of fifth.
The Fighting Irish hold the top spot on the team leaderboard after a one-over 285. Long Beach State is two swings back, while Michigan State and Loyola University (Md.) sit third and fourth, respectively.
Ball State's McCormick Clouser leads the 50-player field after firing a five-under 66 highligted by six birdies.
Tomorrow's second round will be played at Lost Dunes Golf Club with tee times beginning at 11 a.m.
