DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey put together a solid effort against William & Mary at Belk Turf Field, but the Wildcats ultimately fell to the Tribe, 2-0. The Wildcats fall to 1-8, while William & Mary picks up its second straight win and moves to 3-7.
Davidson's Emily Leytham finished with seven saves, while senior captain Madeline Herder had three defensive saves as Davidson dropped a 2-0
William & Mary got on the board first with Lindsey Buckheit getting the ball across the line on an assist from Mary Flick midway through the first frame. Flick found Buckheit in front of the cage and the senior forward slipped the ball past Leytham to give the Tribe an early 1-0 advantage.
Leytham made four saves in the first half, but William & Mary held a slim advantage in shots, 9-7 and corners, 2-1 during the opening frame.
Davidson's defensive unit continued to make plays to start the second half as Leytham came up with three saves, while Herder notched a defensive save in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
It wasn't enough as William & Mary broke though for another goal off a penalty corner at the 58:35 mark. Jesse Ebner inserted the ball to the top of the circle, where Navneet Singh fired a shot towards the right side of the cage. Marisa Pastor beat Leytham off a deflection at the post to make it a two-goal game.
After William & Mary's second score, Davidson's offensive push increased, but the Wildcats were unable to find the back of the net.
Davidson was outshot, 18-7 and the Tribe held an 8-1 advantage in corners.
Davidson returns to action Oct. 4-5 as the Wildcats first stop at St. Louis before heading to Missouri State.
