10/4/2014 4:46:00 PM | Field Hockey
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Emily Leytham earned her first career shutout and the Davidson field hcokey team provided just enough offense to edge Atlantic 10 foe St. Louis, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.
Junior Melissa Funsten had the lone goal of the afternoon as the Wildcats picked up their first conference win of the year.
Davidson struck midway through the first half when the Wildcats earned a penalty corner. Hannah Fisher inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Anna Davis set it up for Melissa Funsten, who fired a shot to the left post and past Tori Westhead. It's Funstens' first goal of the season.
The Wildcats ended up with seven shots in the first half, while St. Louis fired two attempts and Leytham made two saves. Davidson held a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners heading into the break.
After the break, St. Louis' offensive attack picked up, as Caitlin Gibson, Morgan Crowe and Kristin Collins each got shots off within 10 minutes of the start of the second half, but Leytham kept the Bilkins off the board as the junior finished the afternoon with seven saves.
Davidson returns to action tomorrow at 11 a.m., as the Wildcats take on Missouri State.
