Davidson Suffers 3-1 Setback to Monmouth

MONMOUTH, N.J. – The Davidson field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Monmouth, Sunday at So Sweet A Cat Field to wrap up its two-game road swing.
Monmouth outshot Davidson, 23-7, while also holding a 17-5 advantage in penalty corners. Emily Leytham finished the day with 13 saves.
Davidson scored its only goal at the 60:34 mark when Hannah Fisher inserted the ball off a penalty corner. Katherine English fired the ball straight to the cage and past Monmouth's Tanja Win-Kloock to make it 3-1.
Monmouth opened the scoring when Alyssa Ercolino crossed the ball across the front of the cage to the stick of Amanda Schoenfeld. Schoenfeld took a touch before sending a shot to the back of the cage to put the Hawks ahead, 1-0.
The Hawks extended its lead when Trish O'Dwyer picked up a loose ball and found Ercolinio, who pulled Emily Leytham out of place and was able to find the back of the wide open goal.
The Hawks made it 3-0 midway through the first stanza when the Wildcats gave up a penalty corner. O'Dwyer received the ball at the top of the circle and fired the ball straight to the cage and past Leytham.
Davidson returns home Saturday, Sept. 27 when the Wildcats take on Saint Joseph's at noon, before welcoming William & Mary to Belk Turf Field, Sunday Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
