Final Results
FLORENCE, S.C. – Former Davidson golf standout Richard Fountain is one step closer to receiving his Web.com Tour playing card as he finished tied for fifth in a pre-qualifying event Friday afternoon.
Fountain's next stage will be held either Oct. 7-10 or Oct. 14-17, depending on his assigned location.
The 54-hole competition was played on the Par 70, 6,429-yard Florence Country Club layout.
After carding an opening round three-under 67, Fountain posted consecutive rounds of 69 to conclude the 75-player field at 205 (-5). The Raleigh native finished the three-day competition with 14 birdies.
Arguably the most successful golfer in program history, Fountain wrapped up his four-year career with three NCAA Tournament appearances, two individual titles, including the 2009 SoCon Championship, 17 top-10 finishes and 47 collegiate rounds of par or better. In addition, Davidson's only three-time all-conference performer finished as the school's record holder for stroke average, top-fives and top-10s.
About Web.com Tour Qualifying
This is the second year of the Tour's revamped qualifying procedure. From 1965-2012, the PGA Tour held its own Q-School tournament for players to earn their Tour cards. But starting last year, the Tour opted to re-do the process, extending 25 of its 50 new Tour cards through a series of events now called the Web.com Tour finals. The remaining spots go to the top 25 on the Web.com money list.
Q-School has now become the path the Web.com Tour - not PGA Tour.
Qualifying consists of four stages (3 preliminary stages and finals), including the final stage, which will be held on the Champion and Fazio courses at PGA National in Palm Bench Gardens, Fla. on Dec. 11-16. Participants have to survive three preliminary stages to make it to PGA National, where they will then play 108 holes (six rounds).
