Eckstein Leads Golf at Fall Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by Todd Eckstein's final round 72, Davidson (304-304-301 = 909) moved one spot up the leaderboard to wrap up play Sunday afternoon at the 2014 Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
The fall opener was played on the Par 72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course layout.
Eckstein concluded the three-day event at five-over 221. In addition to leading the Wildcats individually, the senior finished with a team-best nine birdies.
Andy Simmons (73-79-76 = 228), Spencer Papciak (78-76-77 = 231), David Sargent (80-74-80 = 234) and Ralph Blasey (79-80-76 = 235) also competed for the Wildcats this weekend.
North Carolina (-26) cruised to the team title with a 23-stroke victory over second-place UNCG and East Carolina.
The Tar Heels' Ben Griffin (-10) maintained his overnight lead to capture individual medalist with a 54-hole total of 206.
In addition to Davidson and the host Tar Heels, the 18-team field featured Boston College, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Elon, Furman, Gardner Webb, George Mason, GRU-Augusta, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Mercer, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, UT-Chattanooga and Virginia Commonwealth.
The Wildcats will enjoy a lengthy break before returning to action at the Fightin' Irish Classic Sept. 28-30 in South Bend, Ind.
