DAVIDSON, N.C. – Head coach John Young announced the 2014-15 Davidson men's and women's swimming and diving schedule Monday, which includes 10 meets in preparation for the squads' first Atlantic 10 Championship meet.
The new season commences Friday, Oct. 3 with the two-day NC Collegiate Kick-Off in Greensboro, N.C. and features three home meets in Cannon Pool: Oct. 25 against College of Charleston, Nov. 7 against Queens and Jan. 10 against William & Mary.
"This year's schedule, including our first Atlantic 10 Championship meet in February, provides our team a strong assortment of competitive opportunities," said Young, who is entering his ninth season guiding the Wildcats. "We'll have a busy October, and are especially excited to see A-10 competition in Richmond and to host our old friends from the College of Charleston on Parents Weekend."
The Wildcats will challenge their first opponent head-to-head following the Greensboro meet, traveling across the state to Greenville, N.C., to take on East Carolina, Saturday, Oct. 11. The 'Cats will stay on the road the following weekend, heading north to compete against new A-10 rivals in the two-day Richmond Shootout, which begins Friday (Oct. 17-18). The men will face George Mason, while the women will face a to-be-determined combination of George Mason, Richmond or Duquesne.
Davidson will remain home for its next two meets, hosting former CCSA rival College of Charleston the following week (Oct. 25), and nearby Queens University following an off-weekend (Nov. 7.)
The Wildcats will get nearly a month off from competition before returning to action at the three-day Total Performance Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, Dec. 4-6. Penn and Johns Hopkins are also slated to compete.
"The team always looks forward to the Total Performance Invitational, where we'll finish the first semester with a tremendous amount of racing," said Young. "The density of swims at that meet affords us a valuable chance to assess the team's progress as we plan for our championship push."
The 'Cats will see another month-long break in competition for exams and the holidays before heading south to Florida for their annual winter break trip. They will compete in the Deerfield Relays, in Deerfield Beach, Fla., Jan. 3. The intensity will increase the following week as Davidson hosts William & Mary, Saturday, Jan. 10, in its home finale. The Wildcats will then take on another A-10 foe the following week, traveling to the nation's capital to compete against George Washington and Big East-member Georgetown (Jan. 17.)
The final tune-up before the A-10 meet will take place at Gardner-Webb, Jan. 31. Davidson will compete in the A-10 Championships for the first time, Feb. 18-21, which will take place in Geneva, Ohio.
"All of our training and racing opportunities are intended to prepare us to explore our potential at the Atlantic 10 Championship in February," said Young. "The team is looking forward to finding its footing in a new competitive landscape, and I am confident that the new meet, in a great pool and among the A-10's very impressive programs, will offer us a terrific stage for building upon the team's recent accomplishments."
Last season, the Davidson men finished third while the women took fourth in the 'Cats' final CCSA Championship meet. Both return NCAA "B" cut performances as senior Dylan Ludwick returns for the men, and sophomores Elise Lankiewicz and Katy Williams return for the women.
