Simmons Paces Golf on Day One of Fall Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Andy Simmons matched his personal best with a one-over 73 to pace the Davidson golf team on day one of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina.
The three-day, 54-hole event is being played on the Par 72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. each day off No. 1 and No. 10.
After making the turn in three-over 39, Simmons posted three birdies on his inward nine to better teammate Todd Eckstein, who finished with a two-over 74, by one.
Playing in their first round of the 2014-15 campaign, the Wildcats carded a 304, which is currently 15 strokes out of the Top-10.
Making his collegiate debut for Davidson, freshman Spencer Papciak shot 78, while Ralph Blasey and David Sargent opened with rounds of 79 and 80, respectively.
North Carolina torched its home course with a 15-under 273 to lead the team standings by nine strokes over Charlotte.
Furman's Bryce Howell fired a bogey-free six-under 66 to grab the top spot on the individual leaderboard by a shot over three Tar Heels.
In addition to Davidson and the host Tar Heels, the 18-team field will feature Boston College, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Elon, Furman, Gardner Webb, George Mason, GRU-Augusta, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Mercer, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, UT-Chattanooga and Virginia Commonwealth.
