DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After battling Liverpool in an International Champions Cup match in Charlotte over the weekend, AC Milan used Davidson College and its soccer facilities earlier this week as a training site while on a pre-season U.S. Tour.
"It was an honor and a thrill to host AC Milan, a club that rivals Europe's very greatest in terms of prestige, history, and Champions League legacy, said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "As they prepare for their upcoming Serie A season, most all of their key players were here on campus including Mario Balotelli, Keisuke Honda, Michael Essien, Sulley Ali Muntari and Alex (recently acquired from PSG). Milan's coaches, staff, and players were very warm and appreciative to the care and detail we put in to their visit – along with our outstanding facilities. It was invigorating for the Davidson coaches and the players to see the professionalism, the sharpness, and the athleticism up close on our very own 1992 Team Field."
Milan's daily workouts were closed to the public, however invited guests and members of the Davidson soccer teams were permitted to attend the sessions.
"Having AC Milan train on our game field was an awesome experience," commented Wildcat captain Shane Macnamara. "Those who were fortunate enough to be in town got the chance to see three different, but equally entertaining sessions. Also, the opportunity to watch up close and personal was a great learning experience for us players. One that will be hard to match."
The Italian team will continue their preseason slate Wednesday evening with a match against Chivas de Guadalajara (Mexican Club) in Houston.
