DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team started off their 2014 season in winning fashion by getting two early first-half goals and playing shutout ball the rest of the way in a 2-0 win over Winthrop Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
Davidson (1-0) avenged a 2-1 defeat to the Eagles (0-1) a year ago and improved to 11-15 all-time in season openers. The 'Cats also improved to 16-10 in home openers all time.
Junior transfer Vicky Bruce put the Wildcats on the board first with a penalty kick goal, the first score of her career, 20 minutes into the contest.
Just over five minutes later in the half, Becca Fisher kicked a long through ball to a streaking Kate Joss on the far side. She gathered in the pass and shot to the far post, going top shelve for her fourth career goal.
Goalkeeper Rachel Locke stopped four Eagle shots for her 15th career shutout.
The Wildcats continue with their four-game homestand to start the year by hosting nationally-ranked Virginia Tech Sunday at 2 p.m. The Hokies come in ranked fifth in the nation after reaching the College Cup a year ago. They opened the season with a 6-0 home win vs. VCU.
