2014 Davidson Volleyball Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Starting with a slew of familiar foes like College of Charleston, Charlotte and Wake Forest, the Davidson volleyball team will trek into the unknown soon after when they embark on their first Atlantic 10 schedule starting September 27. Head coach Chris Willis announced the slate Monday.
"This season provides one of the most anticipated schedules in years. Moving into the Atlantic 10 brings a lot of excitement and fanfare," said Willis, who enters his third season at the helm of the Wildcats. "We'll be traveling to new areas of the country, battling against teams we haven't seen much in the past. The bar has been set high and we are determined to meet that standard."
The 'Cats will kick things off in Charleston, S.C., at the College of Charleston Invitational where they will face the host Cougars at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 in the season opener. The following morning, the squad will take on Kent State for the first time at 10 a.m. and future SoCon member Mercer at 4:30 p.m.
For the second time in three seasons, Davidson will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invitational Sept. 5 and 6. First on the slate are the host Demon Deacons (Friday at 7 p.m.), followed by N.C. Central Saturday morning at 11 a.m. They conclude the day with Presbyterian at 5 p.m., marking the first meeting between the two.
Starting Sept. 12, the Wildcats will host UNC Wilmington, High Point and Charlotte in the annual Wildcat Classic. Davidson's first match of the tournament will come against UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. Friday evening. On Saturday, the 'Cats will take on cross-county rival Charlotte at noon before concluding the event with High Point at 7 p.m. Davidson swept the Classic last season, defeating Charlotte 3-2 in their season opener to make some headway into their 10-15 all-time record with the 49ers, and went on to earn a 3-0 win over the Panthers later in the season- an all-time series that the 'Cats lead 10-8. They last faced the Seahawks in 2012, earning a 3-1 victory to take a 7-6 all-time series lead.
The Wildcats will round out their nonconference slate when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C, to play Winthrop in an 8 p.m. tilt on Sept. 16. The 'Cats hold a clear 19-12 advantage in that series.
"Prior to our conference schedule, we'll get some outstanding preparation against some very good teams," said Willis. "Traveling to the College of Charleston gives us a match against a perennial NCAA Tournament participant (College of Charleston). The Wake Forest tournament pits us against a rising ACC power (Wake Forest). The Wildcat Classic brings familiar teams from across North Carolina that will give our home fans a taste of some great competition."
Davidson opens its inaugural Atlantic 10 season Saturday, Sept. 27, when they host to VCU in a 2 p.m. match at Belk Arena. The 'Cats and the Rams last met in 2004, with the Rams holding a 5-1 all-time series lead. The Wildcats then head out on their first league road trip, hitting up Dayton (Oct. 3 at 3 pm.) and Saint Louis (Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.). It will be a weekend of firsts for the 'Cats, who have yet to face any of the two.
A four-game homestand will make up the middle of October, starting the 10th when the 'Cats welcome Duquesne to Belk Arena for a 7 p.m. contest. The 'Cats and the Dukes faced each other twice from 2003-05, with Duquesne taking a 2-0 series lead. That Sunday (Oct. 12), the LaSalle Explorers will come to town for the first-ever meeting between the two squads in a 1 p.m. match. The following week brings George Washington (Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.) and George Mason (Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.). Interestingly enough the 'Cats have one previous game with each team, beating GW and falling to Mason back in 2008.
Next, the Wildcats head north where they will hit the Bronx, N.Y., to face Fordham on October 24 at 7 p.m. They will then swing over to Kingston, R.I., to square off against the URI Rams in a 6 p.m. match on Oct. 25. It is another weekend of first for Davidson, who has yet to face either set of Rams.
October will conclude with a 7 p.m. Halloween tilt between the Bilikens of SLU and the Wildcats. The Dayton Flyers make their first trip to Belk Arena November 2 for a 1 p.m. match, after which the Wildcats will hit the road to close out the season.
The first stop of the trek will be Fairfax, Va., where Davidson will face the Mason Patriots for the second time on November 7 at 7 p.m. Shifting over to Washington, D.C, the 'Cats will take on the GW Colonials, also for the second time, at 7 p.m. Nov. 8. A week later, the squad heads back to Virginia to wrap up the regular season with a match at VCU November 15 at 2 p.m. in Richmond to close out the regular season.
The 2014 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Tournament will be held in Dayton, Ohio, and run from Nov. 21-23. The top four teams in the regular season are invited to battle for the A10 title.
"Like our fans, we're excited about the upcoming changes and the challenges they will provide," said Willis. "The Atlantic 10 raises our profile as a volleyball program and college as a whole. We'll benefit from this new affiliation for years to come."
