KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Richard Fountain and David Sargent finished tied for 21st to lead the Davidson men's golf team at the 2014 Irish Creek Collegiate Sunday.
The 54-hole event was played on The Club at Irish Creek Par 71, 7,099-yard layout.
Playing in their final tune up before the league championship, the Wildcats came home 11th with a three-round total of 884 (297-289-298). Despite finishing just outside the Top-10, Davidson concluded the annual event just 11 strokes out of fifth place.
Georgia State (288-282-289 = 859), which shared the overnight lead, fired the lowest round of the day to claim the team title by one stroke over North Florida (291-279-290 = 860).
On the heels of a tournament-low seven-under 64 in yesterday's second round, M.J. Maguire (-8/205) of North Florida carded a three-under 68 today to capture the individual crown. Charlie Bull (Akron) and Niall Platt (Notre Dame) finished tied for second at four-under.
Sargent (73-75-71 = 219) paced the Wildcats in the final round with an even-par 71 to record his lowest finish of the season.
In addition to Fountain and Sargent's Top-25 finish, Samuel Echikson (73-79-76 = 228) and Andy Simmons (79-74-75 = 228) ended tied for 65th, while Ralph Blasey (79-69-81 = 229) was one back of his teammates.
Alex Nianouris (75-77-78) and Todd Eckstein (81-76-74), who were competing as individuals for Davidson, finished at 230 and 231, respectively.
The Wildcats will enjoy a two-week break before heading to Pinehurst, N.C. for the Southern Conference Championship at The National Golf Club.
