VIDEO: Southern Conference Championship Preview
DAVIDSON, N.C. – After a two-week break from tournament action, Davidson will compete in its final Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship April 20-22 in Pinehurst, N.C. The three-day 54-hole event will be played on Jack Nicklaus' Par 72, 7,144-yard National Golf Club layout.
Davidson will be paired with Appalachian State and Chattanooga with tee times beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
A year ago, the Wildcats recorded their lowest finish in 40 years, placing second just two strokes behind nationally-ranked and team champion Chattanooga. In addition, Davidson's team score of 886 (297-294-295) was its lowest 54-hole SoCon total in program history.
Richard Fountain, the 2011 Southern Conference Individual Champion, leads Davidson with a 72.2 stroke average, which is also good for third best in the league. A two-time NCAA participant and all-conference selection, Fountain has two titles, 10 top fives and 16 Top-10 finishes for his career.
Highlighted by three top-five finishes, fellow senior Samuel Echikson is enjoying his best season with a 73.1 stroke average. Ranked eighth in the conference, Echikson has posted seven rounds of par or better, including a school-record eight-under 64 in the opening round of the Seahawk Intercollegiate on March 16.
Last year's runner-up and all-tournament selection Todd Eckstein is tied with David Sargent for the team's third lowest scoring average at 74.7. Ralph Blasey will also be in the starting lineup for the Wildcats, who will move to the Atlantic 10 Conference on July 1.
Over the last two years, Davidson has recorded two team titles and 10 Top-5 finishes, while posting its lowest stroke average in school history with a 293.1 this season.
Live scoring will be available each day at www.golfstat.com.
