2014 Davidson Men's Soccer Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. – In addition to the first season of competition in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the 2014 Davidson men's soccer schedule will feature four opponents from the ACC, as announced by head coach Matt Spear Monday
"The preseason will begin with a bang as College of Charleston (Aug. 17) and Charlotte (Aug. 23) are quality and exciting rivals," commented Spear, who is entering his 14th season at the helm of his alma mater.
Following its two exhibitions, Davidson will kick off the 2014 regular season with five straight home matches, beginning with an Aug. 29 contest against Cal Poly at Alumni Stadium. The Wildcats will wrap up the opening weekend with another first-time opponent in Valparaiso, before concluding the homestand against Jacksonville (Sept. 5), Belmont Abbey (Sept. 12) and Wake Forest (Sept. 16).
On Sept. 20, Davidson will at Liberty, its first of four consecutive road matches. Four days later the Wildcats will return to the Commonwealth for a battle with six-time NCAA Champion and 2013 NCAA Semifinalist, the Virginia Cavaliers. A date with in-state foe Campbell in Buies Creek will conclude the month of September.
After competing in the Southern Conference for 42 of the last 46 seasons, Davidson will play its first-ever Atlantic 10 contest at Dayton on Oct. 4. Wildcat fans will get their first look at the new competition when Saint Louis visits 1992 Team Field on Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. start.
"The move to the A-10 is the dawn of a new era for our program and for Davidson. We are excited to join this wonderful conference and to take on last season's regular season champs (Saint Louis), last season's tournament champs (George Mason) and six other new peers."
The Wildcats will step out of conference play on Oct. 14 when they travel to Duke for a midweek contest, looking to avenge a heart-breaking overtime loss to the Blue Devils a year ago.
"With the move to the A-10, some may have wondered if we were going to continue our aggressive, ambitious out of conference aims – including vs. the ACC. We remain committed to playing great teams and hosting Wake Forest and playing at Virginia, Duke and Virginia Tech (Oct. 28) underlines that emphasis and opportunities for greatness."
Davidson's nine-game home slate will also feature matches against St. Bonaventure (Oct. 18), Duquesne (Oct. 31) and UMass on Senior Day (Nov. 2), while A-10 foes George Mason (Oct. 25), Saint Joseph's (Nov. 6) and George Washington (Nov. 9) round out the road portion.
"We want to make a big impact in our first season. Wins in the regular season battles are important for placement and seeding in the conference tournament."
The 2014 Atlantic 10 Tournament hosted by Virginia Commonwealth will be played Nov. 13, 14 and 16 in Richmond, Va.
