Osment Second in 10k, Sets Record on Day One of SoCon Meet

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Erin Osment started the 2014 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field meet with a bang, putting forth a record-breaking performance in the 10,000-meter run. The race was the first event of the two-day meet, which is being hosted by Wofford at Spartanburg School.
Osment was the runner up in the 10k, shaving 18 seconds off the program record with a new mark of 35:30.82. In addition to picking up eight points for the Wildcats, she earned all-conference honors with her finish. Jenny Fritz joined her in the event, just missing a scoring opportunity for the 'Cats with an 11th-place finish in a time of 41:38.76.
Sarah Paddon won the second heat of the 1,500-meter run, advancing to tomorrow's finals in the events. She clocked in at 4:39.07 and will enter tomorrow's race with the fourth-best time in the event. Olivia Menden also qualified for the finals, taking fourth in the first heat with a personal-best time of 4:42.12. Brigid Behrens was 16th in the prelims in 4:51.18.
Also advancing to the finals is Hannah Rieden, who claimed second in her heat of the 800-meter run. She ranked eighth in Saturday's preliminaries, crossing the finish line in 2:12.52. Ashlyn Gruber finished 13th in the prelims, running a time of 2:16.25 in the event while Grace Watt was 16th in 2:17.79.
In other action, Morgan McGrath finished 21st in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash, running a 1:06.00. Kate Kostecky ran the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles, placing 16th in 1:07.59. Molly Marshall was the lone field competitor for the 'Cats, taking 12th in the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.27 meters.
Davidson is tied for ninth place at the event with eight points, with Samford leading the way with a score of 62.5. Appalachian State sits second with 49.5 points, followed by Western Caroline in third with a score of 36. The 'Cats will pick up where they left off Sunday afternoon, starting with field events at noon.
