PINEHURST, N.C. – Three-time all-league selection Richard Fountain finished fifth to lead four Davidson players in the Top-15 as the Wildcats also came home fifth as a team at the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship Tuesday.
The three-day 54-hole event was played on Jack Nicklaus' Par 72, 7,144-yard National Golf Club layout.
Davidson (294-293-293 =880), which shared the first-round lead with Western Carolina (294-282-302 = 878), finished just seven strokes behind team champion and nationally-ranked Georgia Southern (296-284-293 = 873). The Eagles edged Chattanooga (297-284-293 = 874) by a single shot, while UNCG (300-285-292 = 877) ended up four back in third place, one ahead of the Catamounts.
The first player in school history to earn three all-conference selections, Fountain birdied three of his last four holes on Tuesday to shoot two-over 74 and finish at 217 (+1) overall.
After opening with a two-under 70 on Sunday, sophomore David Sargent (219/+3) placed tied for ninth to record the lowest 54-hole finish of his career.
Teammates Todd Eckstein (222/+6) and Sam Echikson (222/+6) turned in solid rounds of 72 and 73, respectively, to tie for 15th, while Ralph Blasey (232/+16) ended up tied for 40th.
Western Carolina's J.T. Poston (-10) led wire-to-wire to claim individual medalist by two swings over Chattanooga's Chris Robb (-8), who carded a tournament-low seven-under 65 today.
Playing in its final Southern Conference Championship before making the move to the Atlantic 10 in July, Davidson finished the season with five top-five showings and a school-record 293.16 stroke average.
