CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Needing one more team point to win the match, Davidson was unable to clinch it as Wofford came back to earn a 4-3 victory in the first round of the Southern Conference women's tennis tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Champions Club.
Leading 3-0, the eighth-seeded Wildcats (7-18) were unable to finish off the Terriers, falling in two three-setters late including the clinching match by Wofford at No. 4 singles. Ninth-seeded Wofford (6-15) advances to face top seed Furman in the quarterfinals.
For the seventh time this year, Davidson jumped out an early 1-0 when it captured doubles wins at No. 1 and 2. The top pair of Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer ran their record to 12-10 by cruising to an 8-2 victory. The team point was then sealed up by the duo of Jenna Brunner and Nisha Crouser after they took an 8-4 decision.
The 'Cats then rolled to their 3-0 lead by getting straight-set singles victories from the senior duo of Moniz-Soares and Tamara Hill. Moniz-Soares capped off her collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 for her 14th triumph of the season and 44th of her career.
Hill also ended her collegiate career on a winning note, earning a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6. It was her 10th career victory.
Wofford then started its comeback with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 over senior Nisha Crouser. It then took the first of two three-set matches at No. 2 as Cummer was downed 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 to make it 3-2.
Freshman Jenna Brunner gave her Terrier opponent a battle to the end, but dropped a 6-4, 7-6 decision at No. 5 to tie the match up at 3-all. Brunner finished her first year with an 11-11 record.
Coming down to the final singles match, Sarah Stein tried to seal up the win for Davdson after having not played since March 22 due to an injury. She regrouped after falling 6-1 in the first set to roll in a 6-2 second-set decision, setting up the final set. The freshman was unable to pull it out though, as she was defeated 6-4 in the last set to give the Terriers the winning team point.
