DAVIDSON, N.C. — Future Davidson women's basketball incoming freshmen Mackenzie Latt and Saadia Timpton finished off their outstanding senior prep careers with numerous postseason honors as they are set to join the Wildcats in 2014-15.
Latt, a 6-1 forward who finished her high school career at Richland Gull Lake in Kalamazoo, Mich., after playing her first three seasons at Sussex (Wis.) Hamilton, picked up a number of awards. She led Gull Lake to a 20-win campaign by wrapping up her senior prep career averaging a double-double on the strength of 16.9 points and 11.6 rebounds a contest to go with an average of 3.2 steals a game. She also dished out close to four assists and blocked nearly two shots per contest.
Latt took home the SMAC East First Team All-Division award and was named to the Battle Creek Enquirer All-Area First Team. In addition, the forward was honored with a spot on the Kalamazoo Gazette All-Area Dream Team (first team), an Associated Press Special Mention and a BCAM (Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan) First Team All-State Class A. The incoming forward was also picked to the Detroit Free Press Dream Team as one of the top-five girls in the state.
Richland Gull Lake reached the Michigan Class A District final where it lost a 45-44 contest to Grand Ledge. Latt ended her prep career with a 14-point outing in the defeat.
Timpton topped off her prep career by helping Myers Park (Charlotte, N.C.) to a North Carolina 4A State Championship title with a 61-46 victory over Southeast Raleigh. The Mustangs went 30-1 during Timpton's final year, finishing No. 1 in the state and 13th in the nation in the USA Today national rankings. During her 26-game outing as a senior prepster, Timpton averaged close to 11 points a game and dished out nearly four assists.
The soon to be Wildcat freshman will play in the prestigious and long running North Carolina East-West All-Star Game Monday, July 21, at the Greensboro Coliseum. The first women's East-West game was in 1975 and has lived up to its billing of seeing numerous players go on to outstanding college and pro careers. The girls game tips off at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys game at 8:30 p.m.
In addition to her all-star selection, Timpton was named to the all-tournament regional team this past year on Myers Park's run to the state title and was again named to the Southwestern 4A All-Conference Team for the fourth straight year. She received the 2014 Mustang Award given to the player who exemplifies outstanding leadership and skill on and off the court. Timpton also received the Distinguished Marine Award given to one female and one male athlete at Myers park for displaying courage, poise, self-confidence and leadership as a high school athlete.
The duo will be joined by freshman Diona Johnson along with Kayla Seymour, who sat out last year after transferring from University of Maryland Baltimore County, as Wildcat newcomers for the 2014-15 season. Johnson kept busy during her senior season by working out with her AAU team after her high school eligiblity ran out for her senior year. The guard, who was a McDonald's nominee this year, had a solid prep career at Gates Chili in Rochester, N.Y., averaging 18 points a game during the 2012-13 season.
Davidson will move to the Atlantic 10 for the 2014-15 season after a 21-year run in the Southern Conference.
