DAVIDSON, N.C. — Emily Rademacher and Ann Fucigna combined for six goals, and Davidson won its sixth straight game by netting another close home victory, this time a 10-9 decision in a Big South women's lacrosse matchup against Coastal Carolina Friday night in Richardson Stadium.
The Wildcats (7-5, 3-0 Big South) won their third game in a row at home by one goal to move within one win of tying the school record for most consecutive victories set last year. They also pushed their winning streak in league play to 10 straight dating back to last year's perfect 7-0 mark.
Just like their previous home games vs. Old Dominion (W, 10-9) and Winthrop (W, 9-8 OT) , Davidson went down to the wire to earn the victory. It scored the game-winner off the stick of Emma Sissman on an assist from Rademacher with 4:42 left and then held off a late charging Chanticleers team in the last two and a half minutes.
The contest featured seven ties and eight lead changes. Davidson never trailed after taking a 5-4 lead on a Rademacher free-position goal with 22:02 in the second half, but Coastal tied it three more times in the half.
Rademacher and Fucigna had three goals each, while Sissman threw in a pair to give her a career-high 29 goals.
Emily Cooke dished out two assists, including her 21st in the first half that tied it up at 3-3 before halftime.
The Chanticleers (3-10, 1-3 Big South) were paced on offense by Sara Nolan with two goals. Seven other players scored a single goal and Keri White had a team-high two assists.
Tied at 8-all after Alicia Geiter netted a goal with 9:27 remaining, Davidson scored the go-ahead and winning goals over the next nine minutes. Fucigna quickly answered Geiter's goal with the go-ahead score at the 8:51 mark, a shot to the top shelf. Then with 4:42 remaining, Sissman scored her team-leading fourth game-winner.
Coastal came back to get their ninth goal with 2:39 left on Charlotte O'Leary's score. It would then get the draw control on the next possession, but Fucigna forced a turnover with 2:06 and the Wildcats ran out the clock for the win.
Davidson had a goal erased midway through the second half that would have made it 8-5, but instead, Coastal came back to score on its next two possessions to tie things up at 7-7 with 13:50 left.
The Chanticleers had a 21-17 lead on shots, but Davidson had game highs of 12 draw controls and 16 groundballs. The 'Cats also forced nine turnovers, two of them by Paige Logan, who added three draw controls and two groundballs. Rebecca Garman also had a good defensive game with three groundballs and caused turnover.
Goalie Katy Boyle was credited with three saves for her seventh career win.
Davidson wraps up a busy week with a Big South road game at Presbyterian this Sunday at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: During the win streak, Davidson has outscored the opposition 69-49 … Fucigna has registered 28 points on 17 goals and 11 assists in the last six games … Sissman has picked up 19 of her 29 goals during the winning streak … head coach Kim Wayne moved to within three victories of 50 for her career.
