DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team is set for its final Southern Conference Tournament run as it opens tourney play Saturday evening, March 8, in Kimmel Arena against Samford in the quarterfinals.
The Opening Tip ...
Davidson (14-15, 11-7 SoCon) begins its march to what it hopes is the program's first tournament title by facing off against sixth-seeded Samford (10-19, 8-10 SoCon) in the quarterfinals Saturday at approximately 6:45 p.m. in Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC Asheville.
SoCon Tournament ...
The first two rounds of the tournament, March 7 & 8, will be held at Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC Asheville, while the semis and championship game will be televised on ESPN3 at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The All-Time Series/Tournament Meeting ...
... is 13 games old, with Davidson holding a 7-6 lead. The Wildcats are riding a four-game winning streak after taking both meeting this year, 83-68 & 76-58.
Davidson and Samford have faced each other once in the tournament, with the Bulldogs upsetting the top-seeded Wildcats in the semifinals during the 2011-12 tournament, 62-51. In that meeting, Davidson fell behind by 20 points at halftime, 36-16, and never was able to climb out of it. Laura Murray led Davidson with 18 points.
Last Meeting vs. Samford, Feb. 3, 2014 ...
… In addition to Laura Murray (25) and Hannah Early (21) combining for 46 points, Davidson drilled home 10-of-13 three-pointers on its way to a 76-58 victory over Samford. Murray and Early combined to hit 9-of-10 three-pointers in the win. Shneeka Center had her third career double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
A 20-5 run by the Wildcats in the early going broke open the game as they grabbed a 34-20 halftime lead. The 'Cats would lead by as many as 22 in the second half.
SoCon Honors ...
The Davidson women's basketball trio of senior Laura Murray, junior Hannah Early and sophomore Dakota Dukes were honored by the Southern Conference coaches and media in earning all-league honors for their outstanding seasons this year, as announced today by the SoCon office.
Murray, the 2011 SoCon Freshman of the Year, capped of her senior campaign by earning All-SoCon First Team on both the coaches and media teams. It's the second time in her career she made both first team squads and the third straight year she was named to the coaches first team. Murray joins Sophia Aleksandravicius (2011-13) as the only Wildcats to earn first-team honors three times.
Dukes and Early were honored for the first time. The sophomore forward Dukes, who earned a spot on the all-league freshman team last year, was named to the coaches' first team, while garnering a place on the second team by the media. Early became the 10th Wildcat to earn All-SoCon Second Team honors as she joined Dukes on the media team.
Murray was also a first-teamer on the College Sports Madness all-conference team, while both Early and Dukes were named to the third team.

Murray Capping Outstanding Career Off During Senior Campaign ...
•Murray was selected to the coaches preseason All-SoCon team for the second year in a row.
•The senior was a three-time SoCon Player of the Week this year and earned December player of the month honors.
•Murray ranks second all-time in career points (1,812) and is 66 away from passing two-time SoCon Player of the Year Aleksandravicius, who holds seven all-time career records.
•She is second all-time with 211 career three-pointers and is also second all-time in made field goals at 610 along with free throws at 363.
•Of Murray's 28 double-figure scoring games this year, 14 have been in the 20-point category.
•For her career, she has scored in double digits 95 times with 31 of those being 20-point outings.
•Murray set the single-season Wildcat record for free throws this year, so far going 134-for-180.
•She is also closing on a few other single-season marks: points (549, needs 36 to set record), field goals made (182, needs 42) and three-pointers (51, needs 16).

Quarterfinals: 9-8
Semifinals: 2-7

Davidson is still shooting for its first SoCon Tournament title after nearly winning a title a year ago. The Wildcats led top-seeded Chattanooga all game until the final eight seconds when the Mocs rolled in a putback in the second-to-last possession of the game with seven ticks left. Davidson had a chance to win it, driving down to the other end only to see their last-second shot fall just short.
A Look Ahead ...
Should the Wildcats advance, they would take on the winner of second-seeded Furman and seventh-seeded Western Carolina/tenth-seeded UNCG Sunday, March 9, with the start time of 2:30 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center.
