Davidson, N.C. – After two successful seasons with the Seattle Sounders FC, former Davidson men's soccer standout Alex Caskey has been traded to D.C. United, as announced recently by his new MLS club.
A native of Dunwoody, Ga., Caskey was originally selected by Seattle in the third round (47th overall) of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft to become the earliest selected player from Davidson. A two-year team captain for the Wildcats, Caskey was a three-time All-Southern Conference first team selection and a two-time NSCAA All-South Region second-team selection. He finished his Davidson career following the 2010 season with 19 goals and 15 assists for 53 points, and did not miss a single match, starting all 76.
"I am looking forward to this new opportunity," said Caskey. "My sense is that D.C. United's style of play, formation and coaching staff will fit me well. Plus I have a ton of Davidson friends in the area, such as former teammate Greg Macnamara. And my brother now lives in Charlottesville, while my parents are in Georgia so it will be easier to connect with my family."
Caskey, 25, appeared in 30 contests with the Sounders over the last two seasons, scoring one goal with four assists, while finishing third on the team in set ups his rookie season. Across all competitions, he started 29 of 42 appearances, registering three goals and seven assists in 2,469 minutes.
"We are excited for Alex and his most recent foray in pro soccer at the highest level in the United States," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
In addition to being an integral part of the Sounders' 2012 run to the U.S. Open Cup Final, Caskey scored his first career goal against David Beckham's LA Galaxy in front of 60,000 fans and a contest televised on ESPN.
D.C. United will kick-off the 2014 slate Saturday when it hosts the Columbus Crew Saturday.
Caskey will rejoin former Sounder teammate Eddie Johnson (U.S. National Team) who moved to D.C. United earlier in the off-season.
