WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Five top-five performances highlighted the final day of competition for the Davidson men's track and field team Sunday at the 2014 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on the JDL Fast Track.
As a team, Davidson finished sixth with 36 points.
The 'Cats came up just short of the podium individually on Day 2, recording three fourth-place finishes. Davidson's distance medley relay team earned the lone podium finish for the meet on Saturday.
Sophomore Charles Rappe, who ranked second after his personal-best 60-meter preliminary run Saturday, lowered his time another seven-hundreths of a second Sunday to 8.51, but the competition improved, as well, and he ultimately placed fourth.
The 'Cats' most points came out of the 800-meter run, where Patrick Rollo (1:55.40) and Wesley Laytham (1:56.29) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Grayam Sailor-Tynes also gave the 'Cats a strong middle-distance performance, as he placed fifth in the mile in 4:21.67.
Rappe, Rollo, Laytham and Nate Faubion then teamed up for the 4x400-meter relay, where they placed fourth in a Davidson all-time top-10 best 3:25.70.
Senior Whitner Chase concluded the "distance double" with a personal-best 14:50.74 in the 5000-meter run to place seventh. He barely missed the podium in the 3000-meter run Saturday, earning a place on Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list in the event in 8:30.35.
Senior Andrew Lantz returned from injury to leadoff the DMR effort Saturday, as the 'Cats placed third in 10:10.55, nearing the recent record of 10.10.08 set at the same facility last year. Faubion, sophomore Will McDuffie and freshman Walker Mogen ran the remaining legs.
The Western Carolina men's and women's teams swept the 2014 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. On the men's side, the Catamounts used 185 team points to bring home the SoCon championship. Appalachian State finished second with 150 points, followed by Samford (112) and The Citadel (66).
Western Carolina also took home several men's individual awards, nabbing three of the five possible individual honors. Jared Johnson was chosen as the 2014 Most Valuable Field performer for his efforts over the weekend, and teammate Josh McSwain was named 2014 Freshman of the Year. Head coach Danny Williamson was selected as both the men's and women's Coach of the Year.
The Citadel's Jamaal Brantley was voted Most Valuable Track Performer and Samford's Brandon Bassett earned Most Outstanding Athlete of the championship, taking home the Heath Whittle award, given to the athlete who scores the most points in the meet.
The Wildcats will open the outdoor season March 21-22 at the UNC Charlotte 49er Classic.
