Echikson Finishes 2nd in Rain-Shortened UNCW Tourney

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- After firing a school-record and tournament-low 64 (-8), and sharing the opening round lead, Davidson's Sam Echikson shot a two-over 74 in the afternoon to finish second in the 2014 Seahawk Intercollegiate, which was shortened to 36 holes due to rain Monday.
The event hosted by UNCW was played on the Par 72, Country Club of Landfall's Nicklaus Course.
Davidson, which sat tied for second following a 10-under 278 Sunday morning, posted a 308 in round two to come home fifth, just seven swings out of the runner-up position held by ETSU.
South Carolina shot a pair of sub-par rounds to capture the team title by 19 strokes at 16-under, 560.
A native of Brussels, Belgium, Echikson was one of three Wildcats to break par in their opening round. The senior finished one shot behind the Gamecock's Will Starke, who set a new 36-hole record of 137 (-7).
Coming off his 16th Top-10 finish, Richard Fountain (71-74) placed tied for 13th. Teammates David Sargent (72-79) and Todd Eckstein (71-81) finished tied for 32nd and 38th, respectively, while Andy Simmons shot 160 (79-81).
Davidson will enjoy a three-week break before co-hosting the Irish Creek Intercollegiate with Charlotte, April 5-6 in Kannapolis.
