Wildcats Drop SoCon Match to No. 19 Chattanooga

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Kevin Birmingham picked up the team's lone win as the Davidson wrestling team was forced to forfeit at three weights and dropped a Southern Conference match to nationally-ranked Chattanooga 37-9 Sunday afternoon at Belk Arena.
Prior to the match the Wildcats honored senior CT Talevi, who will graduate from Davidson in May.
The Wildcats forfeited at 125 pounds, but picked up a win when Anthony Elias won by forfeit at 133 pounds as the two teams entered the 141-pound bout tied 6-6. The Mocs' Mike Pongracz earned a 9-1 major decision over James McCord to put Chattanooga in front 10-6.
Birmingham won a 10-4 decision over Austin Sams at 149 pounds, rolling to 5-0 in SoCon action. The 'Cats trailed by just one point, 10-9, entering the 157-pound bout but took another forfeit to five Chattanooga a 16-9 lead.
Both Patrick Devlin (165) and Nathaniel Powers (174) dropped hard-fought decisions, with Devlin losing an 8-3 bout to Kevin Cooper and Powers taking an 8-4 loss to Michael Hooker.
The Wildcats also forfeited 184 pounds as the Mocs won out for a 37-9 victory.
Davidson will hit the road to close out the regular season, traveling to Boone, N.C., to face in-state foe Appalachian State Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.
