DAVIDSON, N.C. – After a pair of 20-point outings for the week, senior shooting guard Laura Murray was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for games, January 28-February 4, as announced by the league office today.
Murray earned her league-best third player of the week honor (Dec. 3 & 10) and fourth overall for her career. Davidson as a team has earned the honor four times this season, with Dakota Dukes winning the weekly award, Jan. 14.
The senior guard had a fantastic week in leading Davidson to a 1-1 showing at home vs. Chattanooga (L, 62-76) and Samford (W, 76-58). She averaged 25.5 points and 5.5 rebounds a game. Murray shot 54.3 percent from the field (19-for-35) and drained 60 percent of her shots from long range (6-of-10).
Murray started the weekend off with a 26-point outing vs. Chattanooga Saturday on a career-high 10-of-20 shooting with a pair of three-pointers as well as swishing home all four of her free throws. She followed that up with another game-high of 25 points to go with eight rebounds, all on defense, in a win vs. Samford Monday evening. Murray was efficient with her shot vs. the Bulldogs, canning 9-of-15 field goals with four of those made buckets coming from behind the arc as Davidson went 10-for-13 as a team.
The two 20-point outings for the week pushed her total on the season to 12 and gave her 29 for her career. Murray has scored in double figures in 21 of Davidson's 22 games, giving her 88 double-digit games for her career.
Murray, who is second all-time in the Wildcat record books in points with 1,685, is averaging a team-high 19.2 points, which is good for second-best in the SoCon. She also has team highs of 69 assists (fifth in SoCon) and 54 steals (second in SoCon)
Davidson (11-11, 8-3 SoCon) hits the road for a pair of contests, starting with a 2 p.m. tip at UNCG Saturday, Feb. 8, before going to Elon next Monday, Feb. 10, for a 7 p.m. contest. The Wildcats are currently second in the league standings.
