Burton-Akright Wins 3M Dive on Final Day of CCSA Meet

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior diver Kaliya Burton-Akright claimed the 3-meter diving title to help the Davidson women's swimming & diving team to fourth place while Dylan Ludwick was again one of the top finishers in helping the men to a third place finish at the CCSA Championship meet, which wrapped up Saturday evening at Allan Jones Natatorium.
In addition to Burton-Akright and Ludwick, freshmen Katy Williams and Elise Lankiewicz continued to shine, while veteran Meredith Nakano was also a standout for the Wildcats. The meet marks Davidson's farewell to the CCSA as they depart for the Atlantic-10 conference this summer.
Liberty won the 2014 CCSA Women's Championship, accumulating 732.5 points for its first-ever win. Florida Gulf Coast was the runner-up with 718.5 points with Georgia Southern in third at 423. The Wildcat trailed the Eagles by 17 points, taking fourth with a score of 406. In it's first season in the league Incarnate Word claimed the men's title with a score of 886. UMBC, also new to the league, was the runner-up with 844 points followed by the Wildcats with 632.5.
Burton-Akright won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 312.15, boasting a 35-point improvement from her preliminaries score to win the title in her senior season. It marks her second career CCSA championship in the event as she also claimed the 3-meter as a freshman in 2011. Teammate Karen Monuszko was eighth with a score of 2:54.95.
Williams was the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke, meeting the NCAA "B" standard and setting a new program record in the process. She smashed the previous mark by more than three seconds with a time of 2:14.71.
Ludwick took third in the 1650-yard free, clocking in at 15:41.76. He finished with three top-3 individual finishes, winning the 500 free and claiming the runner-up spot in the 200 free. Max Schimanski took fifth in 15:50.85 in the event.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Nakano led a trio of 'Cats in the finals with a second-place finish. She clocked in at 50.52 in taking the runner-up spot, while Angie Healy followed in the "B" final for 10th place in 51.36. Kassie Shannon took 12th, hitting the pads in 51.72. Brandon Kegley was fifth on the men's side, swimming a 45.31. Cameron Bard joined him in the finals with a seventh-place finish in 45.69.
Anna Blair Bullock picked up points for the 'Cats with her second top-15 finish of the meet in the 1650-yard free. She swam a time of 17:15.84, good enough for 10th place.
A pair of Wildcats swam the men's 200-yard back, as Luke Burton finished in 1:48.21 and Ethan Levinson touched in 1:51.40. The duo took fifth and seventh, respectively. The men were also well represented in the 200-yard breaststroke with a trio of Davidson swimmers competing in the "A" final. Grant Smith's fourth-place finish paved the way in a time of 2:01.11. Spencer Gill was close being in 2:03.04 for fourth place while Drew Gill earned an eighth-place finish in 2:07.29.
#Lankiewiz lowered her own Davidson record in the 200-yard butterfly, touching third in a mark of 2:00.47. Liz Mace was the top finisher in the "B" final, swimming to a ninth-place finish in 2:04.00. Emily Covert followed in 11th place with a time of 2:05.78. Will Fox was sixth in the men's race in a time of 1:52.46, with Thomas Bigham following two spots later in eighth after hitting the wall in 1:53.40. Freshman Spencer Davies placed 11th in the event with a mark of 1:55.09.
The women's 400-yard free relay closed out the meet with a runner-up finish, posting a new school record. Shannon joined Nakano, Lankiewicz and Healy for a time of 3:21.50 for the new school mark. The men's squad took third place as Burton, Bard, Smith and Kegley swam a 3:00.93., narrowly missing the Davidson record in the event.
Williams, Lankiewicz and Ludwick, who all made NCAA "B" cuts, will now wait to see if they claim spots at the NCAA National Championships. The women's meet will take place March 20-22 in Minneapolis, Minn., while the men will swim March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.
