KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A pair of Davidson relays set new program records as the swimming & diving teams kicked off the first day of action at the 2014 CCSA Championship meet at Allan Jones Natatorium on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
Through four events, the Wildcat women are tied for sixth place with 40 points and the men sit in a tie for third with 32 points. Liberty sits atop the leaderboard on the women's side with 74 points, 12 points ahead of second-place Georgia Southern, while Incarnate Word is third with 58 points. Incarnate Word is tied with UMBC for the lead on the men's side as each time has 74 points.
The women's 800-yard free relay team of Elise Lankiewicz, Meredith Nakano, Liz Mace and Angie Healy took first place in a time of 7:16.58. Their mark of 7:16.58 was both a new program and conference record, besting the previous Davidson mark by nearly 15 seconds. Lankiewicz's leadoff split of 1:47.49 was also a new school record, breaking the previous record of 1:48.76 set by Lindsay Martin in 2010. In addition, she set a CCSA record and met the NCAA "B" standard.
Davidson's performance in the event made up for a heartbreaking beginning for the Wildcat women. The 200-yard medley "A" relay swam a top-5 time but was later disqualified for a false start – one of seven relays in the event to be eliminated.
The Davidson men also swam their way into the record books. Luke Burton, Brandon Kegley, Grant Smith and Dylan Ludwick teamed for a third-place finish in a Wildcat record of 6:34.58. The quartet shaved six seconds off the previous mark set in 2012.
The men's 200-yard relay of Ethan Levinson, Spencer Gill, Will Fox and Cameron Bard claimed fourth at the meet, picking up 30 points for the 'Cats. They clocked in 1:32.04.
The Wildcats will continue on with the start of individual events Thursday morning. The meet will now follow a preliminaries and finals format, with prelims starting at 10 a.m. each morning. Finals will take place at 6 p.m. starting Thursday evening.
