DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Class of 2018 for women's basketball has been wrapping up their senior prep careers in outstanding fashion. The class, which consists of local product Saadia Timpton (Myers Park in Charlotte) along with Mackenzie Latt and Diona Johnson are each readying themselves for the next level.
Timpton and Latt both kept their teams alive recently in their respective state championship tournaments.
Timpton has been a guiding force in her senior year for the nationally-ranked Myers Park girls basketball team. Myers Park down in Charlotte, N.C., is ranked second in the state and 14th nationally in the latest USA Today expert rankings. The Mustangs, who are also ranked 22nd in the Massey computer rankings, are 26-1 and recently just won the 4A Southwestern Conference Championship. Their lone stepback on the season came to the No. 1 team in the nation in Blackman (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Dec. 31, in a 70-58 defeat.
Despite the national ranking, Myers Park received the No. 2 seed in the North Carolina state tournament for 4A. The Mustangs will play current Wildcat Hannah Early's old high school in Hopewell this coming Friday in the third round. Unbeaten McDowell, which did not play a single out-of-state opponent like Myers Park, earned the No. 1 seed. The two schools could meet in the regionals, March 8, in Greensboro, N.C.
Timpton has led the way, averaging close to 11 points, while pulling in four rebounds, dishing out nearly four assists and pocketing two steals per contest in her 25 games played. She has scored in double figures 17 times, including hitting a season-high 17 twice.
Sussex (Wis.) Hamilton's all-time leading scorer as a junior, Latt had to make a transition to a new school after her family moved to Kalamazoo, Mich., for her senior campaign. She has not missed a beat, playing for Richland Gull Lake, which is 19-1 overall (10-0-1 conference) and finished ranked No. 7 in the last regular season AP Poll in the state of Michigan in Class A.
The 6-1 forward is averaging close to 20 points a game. Latt poured in a game-high 27 points Monday in a 71-29 win vs. Battle Creek Central in the Class A district opener and then added six in a district semifinal win, 47-28, against Battle Creek Lakeview. Latt and Gull Lake advance to play Friday against Grand Ledge (20-2) in the district final.
Johnson is keeping busy and working out with her AAU team after her high school eligiblity ran out for her senior season. The guard, who was a McDonald's nominee this year, had a solid prep career at Gates Chili in Rochester, N.Y., averaging 18 points a game during the 2012-13 season.
