DAVIDSON, N.C. — Playing in its final home game of the 2014 calendar year, Davidson fell short in a 73-57 defeat at home in John M. Belk Arena to James Madison Sunday afternoon, despite getting a career-high 20 points from senior Lillian McCabe.
The Wildcats fell to 3-5 on the season, while JMU continued its impressive start to the season by improving to 7-1.
Led by four of their five starters who reached double figures in points, the Dukes held off Davidson by using a 12-2 run in the final 5:55 to secure the victory. The Wildcats were within six at 61-55 after a pair of McCabe free throws, but they managed just two single free throws in the last five minutes in falling for the third straight game.
Precious Hall scored 20 points to pace James Madison, while Angela Mickens followed with 16 points. Lauren Okafor registered a double-double on 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Toia Giggetts added 12 points.
Pacing Davidson was McCabe with her career day. The senior was very effective from the floor, canning 6-of-8 shots overall and four out of five from behind the arc to tie a career-high. McCabe also swished home 4-of-5 free throws, while adding a personal-best six rebounds.
Reaching the double-digit mark for the eighth consecutive game was Hannah Early, who scored 11 points. She also pulled in nine rebounds and swatted away a pair of shots.
Dakota Dukes scored eight points and had eight rebounds off the bench, while Diona Johnson dished out a season-high five assists.
Davidson found itself down 10-0 to start the game and then 28-8 later on a three-pointer by Hall, who had 16 points in the first half.
Then down 36-15 with 3:57 remaining in the first half, the Wildcats charged back by going on a 12-0 run to close out the half and get within 36-27 at the break. McCabe and Long each hit treys during the run.
The 'Cats continued their scoring surge to open the new half, netting nine of the first 14 points to get within five at 41-36. Early had four of the points, while McCabe drained a three-pointer.
JMU answered though with a 17-9 run over the next eight minutes that pushed its lead back out to double figures at 58-45.
With the help of McCabe, Davidson was able to get to back within six (61-55), before the Dukes pulled away. McCabe scored half of the 'Cats 10 points in a 10-3 run.
The Wildcats hit the road for a five-game swing, starting next Saturday, Dec. 13, at Winthrop. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
