CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The 2014 Fall women's tennis season closed out for Davidson this weekend, Nov. 7-9, by the Wildcats playing in the 11th annual Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Â
Named in honor of former UNC head coach Kitty Harrison, the event featured 13 teams from throughout the country, including Atlantic Coast Conference squads Duke, N.C. State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, in addition to the host Tar Heels.
Â
Davidson faced the likes of Virginia Tech, USC, former Southern Conference opponent Elon, Wake Forest, Virginia, Maryland, William & Mary and Penn State during the three-day tournament.
Â
Representing the Wildcats were senior Blake Nickles, junior Elaina Cummer, sophomores Jenna Brunner and Sarah Stein, and freshmen Anna Catharine Feaster, Ally Sexton and Ava Todd.
Â
Despite coming up short in any of the singles matches the first two days, Feaster, Cummer and Todd all came with a few points of scoring wins for the 'Cats. Feaster twice went to a third set and played a one-game tie-breaker, only to fall short in both tie-breakers. At No. 1, the first-year player played Wake Forest's top player, coming back from a 6-1 first-set defeat to earn a 6-4 decision in the second set. She then played a tie-breaker and fell 7-3.
Â
Feaster again pushed her opponent to another tie-breaker, facing William & Mary's top singles player. She won the first set, 6-4, but fell 6-4 in the next set and then dropped a 7-5 decision in the tie-breaker to fall in the match.
Â
Cummer lost in a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 match to William & Mary's No. 2 singles player.
Â
Like fellow classmate Feaster, Todd also went to a third set one-game tie-breaker against Wake Forest. She regrouped to force the tie-breaker by winning the second set, 6-1, after falling 6-1 in the first set. In the end, the freshman came up just short in an 8-6 decision.
Sunday vs. Penn State, Davidson regrouped and captured two singles wins from Sexton and Brunner. The first-year player Sexton earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory, while Brunner took home a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
Â
Feaster and Sexton both teamed up in doubles action to net a pair of victories on the weekend. The duo opened with a nice 8-4 decision over a team from USC. The Wildcat pair then netted an 8-5 victory against Elon's No. 2 doubles team.
Also scoring a doubles win over the weekend was Sarah Stein and Todd against the Nittany Loins. The Wildcat duo won 6-1, 6-1 in their match.
Â
Davidson will begin its Spring season, Jan. 18, on the road as it travels to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech. It marks the third straight year the Wildcats have opened against the Hokies on the road.
