'Cats Wrap Up Preseason With 83-50 Win over Queens

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Hannah Early led four players in double-digits with a game-high 20 points and Davidson concluded its preseason with an 83-50 exhibition victory Saturday against Queens University of Charlotte at John M. Belk Arena in women's basketball.
The Wildcats, who won both of their exhibitions against Catawba (83-51) and Queens, gear up for the 2014-15 season with a road contest at former Southern Conference-foe Furman next Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m.
Early was joined in the double-figure column by Dakota Dukes (18), Mackenzie Latt (10) and Diona Johnson (10). Dukes pulled in a game-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the preseason, while Johnson filled the stat sheet with four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Off the bench, freshman Saadia Timpton chipped in four points, five rebounds and a team-high tying three steals, while Lillian McCabe poured in eight points.
Early set the tone for the game, helping the 'Cats race out to 21-2 advantage eight minutes into the start of play. The junior canned six of her first eight shots, including a triple, for 13 points. Davidson as team went 10-for-19 in the opening eight minutes and finished the first half at a solid 57.1 percent (20-of-35).
The lead would grow to 30 before the half ended, when Mellissa Giegerich swished home a layup inside off a pass from McCabe for a 45-15 lead at the break. The lead reached to as many as 42 points in the second half at 71-29 on another Giegerich bucket inside with 9:59 left.
Queens found its stroke in the second half, scoring 35 points on 46.4 percent shooting. It hit six three-pointers, including four by McKell Oliverio, who had a team-high 18 points.
Davidson hauled in 26 of its 51 total rebounds on offense, getting 29 second-chance points. It also had 48 points in the paint and picked up 14 fast-break points.
