DAVIDSON, N.C. – Another dominant performance by Elise Lankiewicz led the Davidson women to their third straight victory, 163.5-130.5, but the men came up heartbreakingly short, 138.5-140.5, as the Wildcats faced Queens University of Charlotte in swimming and diving action Friday evening in Cannon Pool.
Lankiewicz won all three individual events she entered, giving her seven consecutive victories dating back to the Duquesne meet. She claimed the 1000-yard freestyle in 10 minutes, 30.69 seconds in her first individual race of the night, and then went on to touch first in the 200 butterfly (2:06.89) and the 500 freestyle (5:07.31) by healthy margins.
Four-tenths of a second ultimately decided the men's meet, as Queens' top relay team touched first in the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, in 1:24.40, while the 'Cats 'A' team finished in 1:24.80. The win gave the Royals a five-point boost that tipped the meet in their favor by two points.
Cameron Bard proved to be the Wildcats' top finisher on the men's side, earning individual victories in the 50-yard freestyle (21.76 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (52.13).
"Both teams put forth impressive efforts tonight," said Davidson head coach John Young. "Don't let their division fool you, these Queens teams are nationally significant, and the way that our Wildcats embraced the opportunity to race a very good team was impressive. I am proud of the women for taking care of business, and especially of the men for nearly grabbing a win in a meet that, on paper, looked out of reach."
Joining Lankiewicz with victories for the women were Kassie Shannon (50 free, 24.65), Meredith Nakano (100 free, 53.28) and Katy Williams (200 breast, 2:24.08). Nakano earned two additional podium finishes, placing second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 breast (1:07.43). Additionally, Williams placed second in the 100 breast (1:06.79), while Shannon placed third in the 100 free (53.79).
Additional top performers on the men's side included Brandon Kegley, who won the 100 backstroke (53.59) and placed second in the 100 freestyle (47.63), and Luke Burton, who won the 200 backstroke and placed third in the 200 freestyle (24.79).
Davidson's divers competed unopposed.
The Wildcats will take nearly a month off from competition before competing in the Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College Dec. 4-6.
"Now we settle in for a November filled with the training upon which our first A-10 Championship performances will stand," said Young.
