DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson swatted away a single-game school-record tying 12 shots, while Hannah Early and Dakota Dukes combined for 39 points in leading the Wildcats to a convincing 76-57 win Tuesday night in John M. Belk Arena against High Point in women's basketball.
The 'Cats (3-2) won their third straight and avenged a 100-65 defeat to the Panthers a year ago on the road.
Dukes reached the 20-point mark for the first time this year, with an even 20 on 8-of-12 shooting to go with eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Early scored 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, and added six boards and a block.
Eight players in all had at least one block as Davidson tied the record set vs. Western Carolina, Jan. 13, 1996.
Mackenzie Latt filled the box score with eight points, a game-high nine rebounds and a season-best six assists. The Wildcats finished with a season-high 25 assists – three away from the program's single-game record – on their season-best 30 made field goals.
After spotting HPU six points to start the game, it was all Davidson from there on. The Wildcats roared back with a 13-0 run finished off by Dukes' sixth point of the half for a 13-6 lead with 13:02 on the clock.
Then leading by as many as eight points (29-21 & 31-23) in the first half, Davidson put the game away two minutes into the start of the new period. With the score 42-36, Early nailed a 15-foot jumper to spark a 17-4 run that opened up a 59-40 lead for the 'Cats with under 11 minutes remaining in the game. Early, Latt and Dukes scored all 17 of Davidson's points during the run.
The lead grew to as much as 24 (71-47) with 4:24 left in the game after Dukes' hit a layup off a pass from Saadia Timpton, giving the 'Cats their 25th assist of the game. Timpton finished with two dimes to go along with nine points and a season-high eight rebounds.
High Point (2-3) was paced by Kaylah Keys' 13 points. The Panthers were held to 34.8 percent shooting, including just 5-for-23 from behind the arc after hitting 11 three-pointers in last year's contest.
Davidson, which shot 44.8 percent for the game, dominated the boards, pulling in a season-high 55 compared to the Panthers' 36.
The Wildcats take a five-day break for Thanksgiving, before they hit the road for a 1 p.m. contest against No. 21/24 Rutgers Sunday, Nov. 30.
GAME NOTES: Davidson trails the all-time series vs. HPU by just one game, 5-4, after tonight's win … the 55 rebounds were the most since Davidson had a 53-rebound effort vs. Gardner-Webb, Nov. 30, 2013 … the Wildcats wrapped up playing three-games in a six-day span and four games overall in a nine-day stretch … both teams each scored 32 points in the paint.
