WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The freshmen duo of Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton registered impressive debuts in their first career Fall event as the Davidson women's tennis team wrapped up their weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational, Oct. 3-5.
Feaster and Sexton each finished third overall in their respective singles bracket, with Sexton teamed up with Courtney McCray to win the D doubles bracket.
Overall, nine Wildcats saw action over the weekend in singles with eight of the players playing doubles as well.
"I was really proud of the ladies this weekend," said first-year head coach Sara Anundsen. "The team has been working hard and making some changes to their games to get better. The tournament was an opportunity for the ladies to put those changes into action, and it was great to see that happen and trust the work they have put in."
Feaster's march to a third place finish in the B singles draw started with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over UNCG's Steph Falcon. She then advanced to the semifinals with a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory against Stetson, before falling there in a close 7-5, 7-6 (3) decision to host Wake Forest's Kasey Gardiner. The freshman closed out the weekend strong though, scoring a 6-3, 6-3 win against her Winthrop opponent to secure third place.
Competing in the G singles draw, Sexton rolled into the semifinals with two strong wins, a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Lauren Chambers from West Virginia State and then a nice 6-2, 6-2 victory against Charlotte. Despite falling in the semifinals (6-1, 6-1) to her opponent from Winthrop, Sexton regrouped on Sunday and earned a third place finish with a three-set win against Stetson, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Scoring at least one singles win over the weekend was junior Elaina Cummer, sophomore Jenna Brunner and freshman Ava Todd. Cummer, playing in the top singles bracket, picked up a thrilling 7-6 (9), 7-6 (4) win against N.C. State in her final match of the weekend.
Brunner lost her first set in the D singles draw, but came back to net a 6-4 first-set win against her Navy opponent before she advanced after her opponent retired. Then in her final singles match of the weekend, the second-year player scored a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Katie Hoch of East Carolina.
Scoring a win on the final day was Todd in the B singles bracket, netting a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Old Dominion.
Also competing in singles action were Sarah Stein (D singles draw), Cassidy Shell (E singles), Blake Nickles (F singles) and McCray (G singles). Shell nearly match her freshmen teammates with a victory, falling short on the final day with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5) defeat to N.C. State's Ashley Cappanolo.
Nickles played well in her first match of the weekend, battling to the end before falling 6-4, 7-6 (3).
In doubles, the pair of Sexton and McCray rolled into the finals of the D doubles draw with two wins, including an 8-0 opening-round victory against West Virginia State. They also scored a thrilling tie-breaker win, 8-7 (5), vs. a pair from UNCG. Sexton and McCray then concluded the weekend by netting another victory that went the distance into a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7), in the final against Navy.
Picking up a couple wins over the weekend was Todd and Stein, who opened the weekend with an 8-6 victory against Stetson in the B doubles bracket. They then earned an 8-1 consolation victory against Charlotte.
The duo of Cummer and Brunner earned an 8-5 win against WVSU in the A doubles bracket, while Feaster and Nickles scored an 8-2 consolation decision against West Virginia State in the C doubles draw.
