CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Representing the Davidson women's tennis team over the weekend at the ITA Carolinas Regional Championship, two of the three Wildcats scored a win in singles play at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of North Carolina.
Jenna Brunner, Anna Catharine Feaster and Elaina Cummer each played in the singles draw, while Brunner and Cummer teamed up in the main doubles draw. Brunner earned a win in the qualifying singles draw, while Feaster scored a win in the main singles draw.
The sophomore Brunner had a great weekend, starting her tournament off with a big three-set victory in coming back from a 6-3 defeat in the first set, to take 6-1, 6-0 victories in the next two sets against Mackenzie LaSure of Appalachian State. Her main draw run was halted though in a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 decision against Erica Braschi of Elon, who was one of the top seeds in the qualifying bracket.
She then moved onto the consolation side and played very well. She started with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Carola Pederzani of Clemson. Saturday, Brunner scored another straight set win, taking a 7-6(5), 6-1 decision against her Winthrop opponent, before her weekend came to an end with a tough 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Maggie Kane of North Carolina.
Feaster earned a spot in the main draw, along with Cummer, and reached the round of 32. The freshman opened her singles draw against Ximena Siles of South Carolina and pulled out a three-setter by the scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Like Brunner, Feaster's tournament run ended against one of the top seeds as fourth-seeded Beatrice Gumulya of Clemson downed the freshman, 6-3, 6-1.
Cummer played against the ninth-seeded Meghan Blevins of South Carolina in her first round main singles draw matchup and dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision. She then regrouped after falling in her next match on the consolation side to Duke's Annie Mulholland (6-0, 6-0) to pick up a nice 6-2, 6-4 victory against Alex Martin of South Carolina.
The pair of Brunner and Cummer played doubles and dropped their first round match to a duo from Winthrop, 8-3.
Davidson will next head to the Charlotte Invitational at the end of the month for its next Fall event, Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
