DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson swimming and diving teams are opening the 2014-15 season at the third annual All-NC Invitational, hosted by NC State at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The two-day meet begins today at 5:30 p.m., and will feature 12 other schools in addition to Davidson: Campbell, Catawba, East Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Greensboro College, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, North Carolina A&T, NC State, Queens, UNC Asheville and St. Andrews.
Davidson boasts a veteran group on the women's side returning 18 letterwinners and losing just four. The men's team returns 16 letterwinners while losing nine.
Last season, the Davidson men finished third while the women took fourth in the CCSA Championship meet, but Davidson is competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference for the first time this season, where both teams were tabbed to finish fourth by the league's coaches.
Both return NCAA "B" cut performances as senior Dylan Ludwick returns for the men, and sophomores Elise Lankiewicz and Katy Williams return for the women.
Ludwick medaled three times at the conference championship meet, winning the 500 free in a school, conference and meet record time, and set a school record and met the "B" standard in the 200-yard freestyle with a runner-up finish in 1:36.51. He was also a member of Davidson's 800-yard free relay school-record breaking team that placed third.
Lankiewicz enjoyed a spectacular rookie season, as she won a conference championship in the 500-yard freestyle and set school records in the 200- (1:47.49), 500- (4:48.56), 1000- (10:13.62) and 1650-freestyle (16:53.77), the 200-butterfly (2:00.47), and the 100-backstroke (55.58) to lead off a record 400 medley relay effort. She contributed to four relay program records in total, including a new CCSA record in the 800 free relay (7:16.58). Lankiewicz's record 200 leadoff split of 1:47.49 in that race met the NCAA "B" standard.
Williams achieved the "B" cut in the 200-yard breaststroke with a program record performance of 2:14.71, and also set a program record in the 100.
Both squads added six each. The freshmen women include Haley Atkins (Diving), Sarah Coats (Breast/IM), Megan Cypcar (Diving), Leah Hubert (Free/IM), Kate Moreton (Back/Free) and Elizabeth Weldon (Free). Joining the men's team are Trey Harris (Back/Fly), Riley League (Breast/IM), Clay Resweber (Free), Cole Riggan Free/Back), Ari Snyder (Free) and Taylor Willenbring (Free/Breast).
