Davidson Swept By Rhode Island, 3-0

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Davidson volleyball team was swept by Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island Saturday night at the Keaney Gymnasium. The defeat came by set scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-23.
Hannah Rau paced Davidson (3-16, 1-7 A-10) with seven kills, while freshman Sarah Fink chipped in five kills. Defensively, Emily Franklin and Kelly Friers led the Wildcats with six and four blocks, respectively.
Franki Darnold notched a match-high 21 kills on .459 hitting to help Rhode Island (15-7, 6-3) to its second straight win.
The Rams got off to a quick start with a 15-8 run to begin the match and never looked back in the first set. The two teams traded points in the second stanza, which featured seven ties and three lead changes. With the score evened at 10, Rhode Island used a 7-2 run to move the score to 17-12. Davidson rallied behind kills from Rau and Fink, but it wasn't enough as Rhode Island took frame, 25-22. The Wildcats could not rally in the third frame, and Catie Steffen scored a kill to seal the sweep with a 25-23 victory in set three.
Davidson returns to the court when it hosts Saint Louis and Dayton next weekend at Belk Arena.
