Davidson Falls to Vermont in Overtime, 2-1
10/19/2014 4:36:00 PM | Field Hockey
BURLINGTON, Vt. – On a chilly 39-degree day, junior Melissa Funsten scored her third goal of the year, but the Davidson field hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback in overtime to Vermont.
Vermont (2-13) outshot Davidson (2-14), 10-9, while also holding a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners. Emily Leytham steered away five shots, while Vermont's Lena Benwood made three saves.
Davidson was first to strike, as Funsten used a reverse stick shot to slide the ball by Vermont's Benwood to give Davidson a 1-0 advantage midway throughout the opening stanza.
Vermont evened the score when the Catamounts converted on a penalty corner. Freshman Jackie Gillen rocketed a one-timer from Krya Lee past Leytham with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation.
Moly Higgins registered the game-winning tally just 1:20 into overtime when Gillin sent a long pass ahead to Higgins who found herself one-on-one with Leytham. Higgins fired a low shot for the score. The goal was Higgins' second game-winner in the last four games.
Davidson returns to Belk Turf Field as the Wildcats host Atlantic-10 foe Saint Francis, Friday, Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
