BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Davidson led from the game's opening drive until inside the final minute, but Campbell, which trailed by as much as 17 in the first half, scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to comeback and defeat the Wildcats, 28-27, in Pioneer Football League action, Saturday evening in Barker-Lane Stadium.
Turnovers swung the momentum of the game throughout, but an interception by Campbell's Aaron Nichols at the Davidson 32-yardline with 1:40 remaining proved to be the biggest. Davidson had preserved its six-point lead with a fourth-down stop at its own 20 with 2:38 remaining, but faced 3rd-and-4 at its own 26 when trying to run the clock out on its ensuing offensive possession. The 'Cats tried to ice the game by throwing for a first down, but J.P. Douglas' pass was tipped in the air and Nichols picked it off.
Campbell quarterback David Salmon connected with Ben Bolling for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds remaining, and Mitchell Brown's extra point proved to be the game-winning point.
Davidson falls to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in PFL play, but has lost three league contests by eight points or less. Campbell improved to 4-3 and 4-0 in the league.
The 'Cats held advantages in many key statistical areas, most notably outgaining the Camels 410 yards to 275. The 'Cats started fast with two touchdowns in the first quarter, keyed by eight receptions for 108 yards by William Morris. Morris finished with 11 catches for 141 yards, moving up to eight all-time at Davidson in career receptions (140), while also becoming the seventh Wildcat to surpass 2000 career yards receiving by reaching 2,072.
Douglas went 28-for-42 passing for 298 yards and touchdown, and was also the 'Cats' leading rusher with 48 yards and a touchdown on 18 attempts. Six sacks resulted in 19 yards being deducted from his rushing total.
David Salmon led a two-quarterback platoon for Campbell, throwing the two fourth-quarter touchdown passes and totaling 108 yards by completing 9-of-21 passing attempts with one interception. Dakota Wolf attempted just four passes and connected on two for seven yards, but rushed for 21 yards and two touchdowns. The 'Cats held the pair to just three completions on nine attempts for 13 yards through the first three quarters.
Senior tight end Trey Huelskamp continued his career year by earning his first career touchdown to give Davidson an early 7-0 lead. Douglas marched the 'Cats down the field, covering 78 yards in 13 plays by throwing on 11 of them. Eight were completed with six hauled in by Morris. The 'Cats yielded just one first down on Campbell's first possession, and a 36-yard completion to Huelskamp keyed another successful touchdown drive, which Douglas capped himself with an 11-yard run.
After a Campbell three-and-out, a 43-yard pass to Morris keyed a successful field goal drive, giving Davidson a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter.
After another Campbell three-and-out, the 'Cats quickly reached midfield on their next possession, but the momentum swung for the first time when Douglas fumbled on a rush up the middle.
Campbell took advantage of the short field, as Wolf capped a six-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. The Camel defense then earned its first three-and-out, and Campbell used a 33-yard rush by Jared Joyner to spur another touchdown drive, as Wolf ultimately scored from 8 yards out to cut the deficit to just three points.
A Davidson fumble in its own territory gave the Camels an opportunity to take a lead before the halftime break, but Bryant Bednarek intercepted a pass at the 4-yardline and returned it near midfield.
The interception seemed to swing the momentum back in the Wildcats' favor, as the 'Cats turned a pair of Campbell fumbles into 10 points and a 27-14 lead, while holding Campbell minus-six yards offense. However, the Camel offense got on track in the fourth, as Salmon engineered an eight-play, 54-yard touchdown drive with 12:13 to go to pull the Camels back within one score.
After Davidson's ensuing offensive drive stalled out at midfield, Campbell drove 54 yards on 14 plays before turning the ball over on downs at the Davidson 20 with 2:38 remaining. The late turnover setup the short, game-winning drive.
Davidson returns to Richardson Stadium to host Stetson Saturday at 1 p.m.
